For one of our first briefs, we were tasked to create our own branding. To create a logo, a cover letter, a business card, a visual CV and platforms in which the logo would look different on.
As My favourite part of the creative triangle is 'The Big Idea' I needed to create something to reflect this! Looking at the first letter of my name O, I thought about using a shape to represent that. Furthering this idea, I thought about the line of work I wanted to go into: Events, and came up with the idea of using tessellation within my business cards to build up a net. So one card is only one part of the picture. I then incorporated this idea of being a part of a bigger picture into my CV. Therefore where the business card logo is at the top would be a blank space and could only be filled by slotting in my business card. Going onto create my logo, I was having some trouble finding colours to use. I then came up with the idea of using pattern as my background instead of just colour. Looking into my aspired line of work, I came up with the 4 stages of interacting with people: Seeing - Eyes, Shaking hands - fingertips, Talking - Mouth and listening - Ears. I then used this within my logo and as the background to my business cards. Keeping the idea of tessellation in mind, I then tessellated the singular icons into my logo around the O. For my visual CV, I wanted something that was simple and easy to read, but also something that I would be able to recreate with my own indesign and photoshop skills. I chose a layout that I thought would fit with my organised persona well and went with that.

Lord Whitney Week

The Lord Whitney week was probably my favourite week on university so far! I really enjoyed the fun and more relaxed atmosphere of the project and also the way we were able to just immerse ourselves within it. I must prefer that way of working on something solidly for 2 whole days rather than bits at a time. I was amazed by how much can be done with recycled materials, the fact that they had worked with photographers such as Rankin and with Missoni for a fashion film was inspiring as it showed me how fashion wants to be original, fresh and fun.
I was certainly inspired by the thinking outside the box attitude that Lord Whitney have. I am a very logical and strategical person, so when we came up with the idea of making a whole world under the sea and making costumes for ourselves to be the creatures, it was a HUGE jump for me.
Our set actually took up the entire wall of the fashion room and was massive, and although I was skeptical about whether we would get it all done or not, we managed to pull it off and I was really happy that we did. The finished product was a bit rough and ready, but the ideas and creativeness that was out into it can be seen and that was a big lesson for me to learn. That things don't always have to look perfect to be good, sometimes the idea is the best part of it.
If we were to do the task again, I think we would plan our time a bit more effectively so that the execution could have been better. We would also make sure the camera was stable so that each shot was exactly the same space rather than moving it from time to time.

Guest Lecturer: John Lyle

John starts his lecture with us, "Branding. It's a little bit more than logos". Its the start of a brand experience, it wants to have influence at every touch point, and its the promise you make and consistently deliver.
Quality is everything! Throwing good money at advertising isn't the answer, you need to have exceptional products in the marketplace. The story you put around it defines it and who its aimed at. It is how you differentiate one brand from another. After all, branding isn't about creating things, its about creating differences. You need to create consistent feelings rather than consistent logos. Brands work best when they are built on real values. However in order to do this, they need to know what it is that makes them different.
Buyers in our generation have all the information they need at the touch of the web, so sometimes getting it wrong is actually getting it right! Brands that don't show flaws don't make or keep friends or followers. They like to see that you are REAL.
A brand is made up of 3 elements: price, function and emotion. For example: Ryan air are based on price, British Airways are function and Virgin are emotion. With emotion, people tend to love you beyond all reason. Also, creating a positive message is key! Where Nicorette should be STOP or QUIT, they use START to create a more positive message and encourage people to create that emotional bond.

"Get people to fall in love with you over and over again"

Data Documentation

For a part of our Moving Manifesto research, we were asked to collect data visually about ourselves! Seeing as technology plays such a leading role in the emersion of fashion at the moment, I decided to document the amount of snapchats I took in a weekend, and the times that I was taking them the most. Here are 2 images of the data I collected.
From this, I gathered that people generally only take snapchats/ social media images when they are doing things that are exciting, or when they look their best. Thus, we want to create a perception that we are the vision of "perfect" that society says we should be. Looking into databases such as 'selfie city', it shows that we mostly create our online presence based on positivity, but this is an unrealistic aim. Everyone has ups and downs, we just choose not to document the latter.
In my moving manifesto I then came to the idea that I would ask the question "How do you want to be perceived", taking pictures of the image they would upload to social media, and the image that is more REAL and everyday.

Making a Moving GIF

This was one of the BEST lectures I've had! I felt that I really learnt some valuable skills during this lecture, and more importantly, skills that I NEED for projects during this term. Claire was really good at making the steps of creating a GIF clear, and easy to remember. Not only this, but there were no complications while doing it yourself! The fact that if we needed to go over it again, there was/is a youtube video explaining the whole thing, is really helpful too as it means we have something to go back to!

STOP MOTION VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW9iCeszU1Q

I was able to create 2 moving images (GIF's) during the lecture, and also completed the last technique using a series of images to create a moving image. I am looking forward to using this technique in further projects, such as the Moving Manifesto!
